Artesian cheese making in the Unite States is enjoying a renaissance in recent years. There is a greater emphasis placed on locally grown, regional food.  Those expert cheese makers, the French, describe it as gout du terroir or “taste of a place”. This refers to the unique characteristics connected to the land. Climate, pasturage, the breed of animal and the care they received, the season of the year and even the time of day all contribute to the quality of the milk and ultimately the cheese that is made from it.

 

SPECIALIZING IN ARTISAN CHEESE OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Cheese and Crackers is a small cheese shop and bakery started in October, 2007 by Yachats residents Karen and Todd Moyer. Karen is also a glass artist, and in the past has co-owned a successful bakery in Pennsylvania. Todd is an electrical engineer who has worked in the video electronics and semiconductor industries. He's currently working in the marine electronics business on the Oregon coast.

After moving to Oregon in 1996, Karen and Todd settled on Yachats as their favorite place on the coast, and generally visited a few times a year. Eventually, in 2005, they bought a second house in Yachats, and decided to try to move to the coast. After the startup company he worked for went out of business in 2007, Todd was able to find work on the coast, and the couple was thrilled to achieve their goal sooner than they had hoped.

But, when Karen and Todd decided to move to the coast from the Willamette Valley, they were thinking they'd really miss some things available in a larger metropolitan area, and one of the big ones was the vast array of artisan cheeses they enjoyed eating and learning about. Figuring there were quite a few local residents and visitors to Yachats who had a similar appreciation, they decided to try offering as large a variety of cheeses as possible to their little town, and happily, it has worked out very well. They are passionate about discovering new cheeses, and always try to have something new in the shop.

Since opening the store, Karen has used her baking skills to develop several new varieties of crackers which have become quite popular. She also enjoys making quite a variety of food items from scratch, offering soups, turnovers, and pizzas. The couple is happy to be a part of the small coastal community, and looks forward to exploring new opportunities in their new home.
